Sciatica Exercises: Minimize Your Pain

There are many reasons and root causes of back pain and pressure on the sciatic nerve is one of them. exercise can help

If your physician has confirmed that you’re suffering from sciatica, chances are you will be advised to do some sciatica exercises in order to get relief from pain. Sciatica is a condition that results from sciatic nerve irritation and is usually experienced from the lower back to beneath the knee. Your sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, spreading the length of your lower body. A herniated disc that ends up pushing up against the nerve is the leading reason for sciatica. However anything that causes irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can result in the condition. A few of the catalysts that frequently lead to this kind of pain are injury, nerve irritation from adjacent bones, infection and internal bleeding. The two most reliable means to find out if you have sciatica are your medical history and a physical exam.

Exercise is an excellent approach to sciatica home treatment. If you want to design a daily stretching program to help alleviate your symptoms then you’ll have to talk to an experienced professional. Prior to performing sciatica exercises, though, it is vital to talk to a physician or physical therapist to locate the underlying cause of the pain. Make certain to get your doctor’s okay before endeavoring any of the following exercises for sciatic nerve pain treatment.

Stretching your back is very effective in relieving sciatic pain and is quite simple. While lying on your back, flex your legs to pull your knees close to your chest. Then wrap your arms around your legs, applying gentle pressure just under the knees, which will provide your lower back with a good stretch. Always use slow and controlled movements and don’t stretch beyond your comfort level.

The quadriceps stretch is another effective sciatica treatment exercise which really helps to relieve pain. Lie face down and pull your right leg up until it touches your buttocks. Take hold of this leg with your right hand and pull your foot as close as you comfortably can. Hold for several seconds and then do the same thing with your opposite leg.

Another exercise for sciatica is done by sitting on a flat surface and letting your palms support your body weight while in this position. Stretch out your feet in front of you while keeping your back straight. Lower yourself back onto the floor, then bend one of your legs so that the knee faces your chin. Place your hand on your bent leg and hold it towards you for several seconds and then repeat the process with your other leg.

Poses that flex the mid-section are good sciatica treatment exercises as well. Begin by placing yourself on a sturdy chair with a back that does not curve, leaving a small space between your knees as you sit. Twist your upper body from the waist to one side, hold the pose for ten seconds, and then twist your body to the other side and repeat.

While taking part in exercises to treat sciatica, remember to watch your posture. Take in deep breaths and remain calm and relaxed during the whole process.

A New Back Pain Solution

After you have had back pain for over twenty years a treatment such as spinal decompression is an absolute Godsend for some people

Through our experiences in our San Antonio  clinic, we have found that chronic back discomfort is incredibly common. Due to the failure of the typical treatment methods, a large number of people are living in constant pain needlessly.

While the most commonly-used  treatments have a high failure rate, new advancements in treatment are getting excellent results even for patients who have been suffering for many years without relief.

For a list of alternative, effective natural treatments Click here: Natural Pain Relief Alternatives

One of the most dramatic  breakthroughs we’ve seen in our San Antonio, Texas office is spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is a technologically advanced form of spinal traction that reduces spinal disc bulging, enhances disc hydration and nutrition, and mobilizes spinal joints and connective tissue. For properly-selected patients, the results are often nothing short of amazing.

Unfortunately, spinal decompression remains underutilized as a treatment for a couple of reasons. First, the early marketing for spinal decompression was often hype-filled and factually inaccurate. Although decompression is statistically the most effective treatment currently available for most serious types of back pain, the early marketing for it promoted it as a panacea for all  sufferers. Spinal decompression does enjoy an excellent success rate, but it is not effective in every patient and it is simply not appropriate for every sufferer.

Another reason that spinal decompression continues to be underutilized for treating  painful back problems is due to the usual challenges that all new health care procedures face in the United States.

The problem is that insurance companies refuse coverage for medical procedures that don’t have an established procedure code. The American Medical Association produces the codes, but won’t add a new code until a decent number of doctors are using the new procedure. Doctors won’t invest in the equipment and/or training to use the new procedure if it’s not covered by insurance (because they will have a hard time getting paid for it). This brings us back to the insurance companies not covering the new procedure because there’s no code for it. Because of this system, it usually takes several years for any new treatment to be widely used, no matter how beneficial it may be.

Due to the lack of insurance coverage for spinal decompression, many of the  patients we consult with at our san antonio spinal decompression clinic will opt to go with insurance-covered treatment methods. Unfortunately many of these continue to live in pain for years and spend thousands of dollars in insurance co-pays and deductibles on the standard back pain treatments without any lasting relief.

Many of these  sufferers finally opt for surgery looking for a cure for their symptoms. Statistically, about half of the patients who do seek a surgical treatment  discover that the surgery either does not help or makes things worse.

While spinal decompression is far from 100% successful, it does get good to excellent results for the vast majority of back pain patients. Ironically, although some patients we’ve consulted with have opted to go the surgery route because they think it will be less expensive due to it being covered by insurance, most back surgeries wind up being more expensive to the patient than spinal decompression.

What many patients fail to realize is that the co-payments for a high-priced medical procedure like back surgery will usually run several thousand dollars. Even with no insurance coverage at all, spinal decompression typically costs the patient less out of pocket than an average  surgery, and a lot less than a complicated back surgery.

In most cases, spinal decompression is statistically the most effective treatment available and in the long-run is also usually the most cost-effective treatment available.

Dr. Michael Golab, D.C. and Dr. Ronald Fielden, D.C. are the treating doctors at South Texas Non Surgical Spinal Center. Visit their website for more about spinal decompression and their San Antonio back pain treatment program.

Take Charge of Your Pain With Natural Back Relief

Many individuals these days are suffering from back pain, sometimes on an ongoing basis.

If your back only hurts from time to time, over the counter painkillers are OK to take. However if you have a persistent back problem, medication isn’t a long term solution. For these folks, there are quite a few natural approaches to treating the problem that can bring them relief without drugs.

> See Natural Remedies For The Treatment of Sciatica and Back Problems

Some of these approaches to natural relief are rooted in alternative medicine. Oftentimes those who suffer will get satisfactory results from these natural treatments.

Two of these methods of alternative medicine, acupressure and acupuncture, are applied to particular body parts in order to lessen muscle aches in the back. Both of these therapies have been shown to have a substantial effect on chronic conditions. Acupressure comprises applying pressure to specific regions of the body that are believed to affect the back, and thereby lessen the pain. The practice of acupuncture requires sticking very thin needles into the body; these needles are specifically created for this process. Based on traditional Chinese medicine, the placement of the needles is designed to alleviate discomfort in certain parts of the body.

Eft is one of the latest developments in energy therapy that uses acupressure in an easy to learn user friendly technique and has had consistently good results in bringing relief. Access the demonstration video here: Pain Relief with EFT

With these treatments, you will likely have to undergo several sessions in order to get it under control. Even just one session of acupressure can go a long way towards minimizing painful episodes and you may notice the results right away. For more permanent results, though, you must go for treatment about once every week.

There are other choices in natural back pain relief too. Many herbs and botanical products have considerable healing power. A few of these remedies also lessen painful inflammation and diminish symptoms of discomfort. If the cause of your condition is swelling and inflammation in your back, a good number of these natural preparations can ease this problem. These properties are not only useful foryour  back, but can also alleviate various other aches throughout the body.

Capsicum patches are another natural relieving remedy. You affix this patch to the painful region where it releases its analgesic properties. These patches can be worn for several days and remain effective even when they get wet.

There are a number of other options when it comes to natural treatments for back problems, including yoga exercises and other exercises for back pain relief. If you’d like to avoid taking pharmaceutical products to manage your condition, there are many choices that you can feel safe and comfortable using instead. Just don’t forget to check with your doctor before using any of these alternative treatments.

Causes of Sciatica

Causes of sciatica are varied, and unfortunately in many cases the cause of  sciatic pain cannot be identified. It is believed that the general wear and tear of the body can result in sciatica pain, which can usually be relieved with some form of sciatica treatment. Sciatic nerve pain is caused by injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve pain starts when the main nerve into your leg, the sciatic nerve, is irritated, pinched, or compressed in some way. This can happen for one or more of several reasons; the following are the main causes of sciatica:

  • Isthmic Spondylolisthesis – A stress fracture in the fifth lumbar vertebra, known as L5 can cause disc movement and hence sciatic symptoms.
  • Piriformis Syndrome – The Piriformis muscle is located in your lower back and can sometimes spasm, resulting in sciatica symptoms.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease – Discs in your spine age just as you do, and are subject to wear and tear. This is just another way of saying that your discs are aging and one of them has given way, hence pinching, irritating or putting pressure on your sciatic nerve.
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis – Different roots of your sciatic nerve pass through passageways in your spine. The passageways could become smaller, which will result in pinching, irritation or increased pressure on the nerve.
  • Lumbar herniated disc – The discs in your spine are like shock absorbers, which allows the back to bend and swivel. Ageing may weaken or damage these discs and a disc may bulge out or even split, pinching or putting pressure on your sciatic nerve. This is one of the most common causes of sciatica pain.
  • Trauma – Accidents that causes sudden compression of the sciatic nerve can produce great pain, for example, breaking a bone that results in pressure on the nerve.
  • Tumors – This may result in irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve and produce sciatica.
  • Pregnancy – When you carry a baby there is extra strain on your spine, which can cause sciatic pain.

Advice and guidance on sciatica treatment products that are opening sufferers eyes to new sciatic nerve treatment methods can be found by visiting the new website “Guidance On Sciatica Treatment Products”.

Can you get the answers that will remove the pain that sciatica sufferers have to deal with? I personally believe you will, but the only way to really find out is to visit http://www.guidanceon.com/sciatica/.

Conventional or Natural, Treatments For Sciatica

As many of those who suffer from sciatica know, regular treatment for sciatic nerve trouble is not always effective and is often short-lived and needs to be repeated as the symptoms reappear which means a lot of time spent inextreme discomfort

The symptoms have often been difficult to treat, but a new option to this debilitating problem now promises to provide effective relief in most cases with little or no risk.

Get Rid Of Sciatica Naturally Now! Click To Learn How

Natural treatments are also starting to provide some effective suppport alongside conventional treatment and sometimes instead of it as more and more people are turning towards natural relief for sciatic problems, herniated disc or bulging disc and leg or lumbar discomfort and sciatica buttock pain

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve irritation

The term is often used to describe uncomfortable sensations going down the leg, however the true definition is irritation of the sciatic nerve, which is a combination of several nerves as they leave the lower back. The majority of cases of sciatica are caused by herniated or bulging discs in the lumbar spine. These discs are soft cartilaginous structures that provide cushion between each vertebrae.

Bulging disc/hernia

Discs have both inner and outer portions. The inner area is softer in consistency compared to the outer portion because they have a higher water content. Once the outer fibers become weaker or are damaged the softer material begins to move its way outward because of the pressure on the disc itself. As it moves out it begins to create a bulge or whats called a hernia, causing the disc to protrude outwards and narrowing the hole where the nerve exits.

This can cause pressure and inflammation that can eventually irritate the nerve which in turn causes severe discomfort, numbness or weakness down the legs and in the back

Conventional treatment

Traditional treatment programs typically consist of targetted medication, injections and in severe cases surgery. These approaches may work in the short term to reduce inflammation and decrease the pain somewhat, however they also carry with them significant risk.

The risk to reward benefit is often not worth it long term as most of these treatments are only temporary. If the problem becomes more severe and the nerve is actually compressed then these treatments may offer no relief at all.

Steroid injection

One of the most common treatments applied is steroid injection. This helps to reduce the inflammation. This can definitely bring temporary relief however it has a side effect. Discomfort may come back even worse. It can also trigger an increase in blood sugar.

Surgical intervention

If sciatic pain becomes unbearable then surgical intervention may be recommended. In a small number of cases this treatment may provide relief, at least temporarily. The problem is that surgical outcomes on the spine are low with about a 50% success rate and it brings with it significant risk factors. A common condition called failed back surgery syndrome is associated with spinal surgery and can the result of excessive scar tissue formation, spinal instability after surgery and increased stress on other spinal structures. The risk is also there for the need for a repeat surgery down the road.

Newer methods

Spinal decompression

Spinal decompression is a new procedure that is very effective in relieving symptoms. This treatment doesn’t have any risks or side effects Spinal decompression gently and logarithmicly pulls the spine, safely bypassing the guarding reflex muscle contraction associated with traditional traction. This procedure allows a therapeutic pressure to develop inside the disc space that helps to heal the disc and reduce inflammation or the bulge. This procedure has 80% success rate.

Spinal decompression corrects the problem for a long time. It helps alleviate the discomfort for a long period of time. As the research continues, more and more benefits of spinal decompression continue to arise.

More natural treatments are also available including acupuncture, Eft therapy, special dietary programs to control or reduce inflammation, the use of deep relaxation techniques, such as meditation, the active practice of laughter, massage, chiropractic, magnet therapy and many more.

Poor Sitting Posture – Neck And Back Pain Relief

How much time do you spend at your desk or in a chair during the day?

With so many of us in desk jobs and so many people who love the surf the Internet …

… it is important to remember that there is good sitting posture and poor sitting posture. Your posture has so much to do with your comfort and your health, so make sure that you keep a few tips in mind.

If you ever experience pain while standing up or experience body ache from sitting in particular positions for long periods, now is the time to try something different as well as learn how to sit correctly in a good office chair posture. Here are a few steps for avoiding bad sitting posture that you should keep in mind as well.

You must avoid sitting on your tailbone. The tailbone is the bottom bone of the spine. If you sit on it for any length of time, this can cause stiffness, soreness and pain. You should always sit squarely on your buttocks.

lower back pain reliefThe two bones that should bear the most weight are your sit bones, which are part of your hip bone covered by your buttock muscle. They are much better equipped to take on the weight of your body than your tailbone is. Make sure that you are sitting squarely and that you don’t lean too far backwards or too far forward.

You should check where you are holding your shoulders right now while you are reading this article. Are you hunching your shoulders forward? Most likely, you have your shoulders curled forward as you sit at a computer working all day. This causes tension in your shoulders. It will influence the way you look and feel on a regular basis.

Widen your shoulders and pull them back. It might be a bit of a strange feeling, but in a little bit of time, this will start to feel quite normal. Do some exercises to loosen up your rounded shoulders posture.

Do you crane your neck? This is something that happens fairly regularly when you need to hunch over and peer at your screen. This will cause tension and strain in the back of your neck. One quick fix for this is to change the orientation of your computer screen.

While using a computer monitor with a flat screen, it can cause you to tuck in your chin to view it. Simply raise the screen up on a stand, while trying to figure out your proper neck posture.

Are you rounding your lower back? As you are sitting in a hard, straight back chair with a 90-degree angle from the seat, you may be rounding your lower back. This may result in bending forward slightly to support your entire back. You need a good ergonomic chair and then ensure that the seat is slightly tilted forward.

These tips may be hard to keep in mind, depending on your levels of strength, flexibility and body awareness. Joining a program centered on body awareness, strength, relaxation and flexibility can help you relieve the pain you feel when using poor sitting postures. Such programs do not take much time at all and they will aid you in finding relieve from the back pain you suffer while improperly sitting.

Better posture offers you many benefits, including better health, more energy, better relaxation and the freedom from the back pain your suffer. It will also help to improve your overall general well-being. Think of what it will mean to you to be free of the nagging tension and pain you feel right now.

Low Back Exercise For Back Pain Relief

Anyone who has to sit in front of a computer all day knows the importance of flexibility.

If you don’t get up every once in awhile and stretch out, your lower back becomes stiff and sore, and good posture hard to maintain throughout the day.

Sitting in an awkward posture could also lead to pinched nerve or sciatica problems.

      >> Click here for sciatica and back pain treatment and relief

So it’s your job to take the necessary steps to keep it from getting worse. The best way to do this is by utilizing the standing forward bend low back exercise

The standing forward bend strengthens the entire back and hamstrings but is especially good for the lower back. Have you ever gotten up from a long stretch at the computer and not had some sort of back pain? If not, you should start taking care of your back now before you wind up with serious back problems as you get older. The standing forward bend has other benefits too. It encourages proper neck alignment, helps overcome poor posture while sitting and helps to relieve your sore tailbone.

The standing forward bend is easy to do and can even be done at the office since all you need is a place to stand. To do this exercise, stand with your feet beside each other and bend forward from your hips. Exhale as you bend forward. Do what feels comfortable and do not force your head down if your back is tight. Be relaxed. This can be an advanced yoga exercise but you should do it according to your abilities.

People who do the advanced version of this exercise are able to place their hands flat on the floor. If you cannot do that, don’t worry, you will still get a lot of benefit. In fact, to do the advanced version you need to warm up your muscles first and you don’t have time to do that at work. A full posture program would be an added benefit but this exercise by itself will help you a lot. Anyone can do the simple forward bend and there is no need to warm up first so it is an ideal exercise to do throughout the day. Stay relaxed and make slow movements.

  1. Stand up straight with your feet at hip width
  2. Put your hands on your hips
  3. While keeping your knees straight, bend your upper body forward
  4. Let your arms hang straight down towards the floor
  5. Breathe and relax
  6. Hold the position for one minute
  7. Return to the standing position by rolling your back upright, your head being last

While you do the exercise be aware of any tension in your back and body. This simple awareness will help bring relief. Paying attention to your body can help calm many discomforts.

This version of the forward bend is very good for relieving tension all throughout the back, but especially in the lower back area that receives so much abuse while sitting. If you take advantage of this low back exercise then you’ll be able to relax those muscles and get the relief needed to keep your productivity levels high and eliminate the low back pain.

You will get the best results from this back exercise if you do it as part of your daily routine. It doesn’t take much time so you can fit it in several times a day like when you first get up in the morning, during your breaks at work, before lunch, and right before you go to bed. This will help relieve the pain you have now and will also help prevent problems with pain in the future.

>> Click here for sciatica and back pain treatment and relief

In the end, lower back pain can be an irritating obstacle to overcome. While over-the-counter medicine can give you short term relief, you need to take advantage of a complete posture exercise system if you want a long term answer. You’ll gain more flexibility, less tension, and all the psychological issues that come with chronic pain. Best of all you can do it all naturally.

Lower Back Pain Exercises – An Introduction To Back Posture Overhaul

Lower back pain can be agonizing

Without an efficient and healthy lower back, every moment spent sitting or standing can be challenging, leaving us hopelessly wondering if the pain might ever lessen or vanish.

It could be due to sciatic nerve pain, or just poor posture. Pain from an unknown origin is also quite worrisome, since we can’t rid ourselves of it if we aren’t sure what causes it, often wondering if expensive drugs or surgeries might do the trick.

There is hope, however. Unless resulting from a serious trauma such as a break, most lower back pain can be lessened or eliminated completely and naturally by a good postural program and a regular exercise routine.

The lower back carries more weight than we may realize, even when our bodies feel relaxed and appear to be at rest. The head, shoulders and even the arms apply vertical pressure on the lower back and spine during every moment spent up-right, even when we sit.

Much of this support is derived from the lower back’s inward curve toward the body , forming an arch. Arches are stable structures capable of efficiently supporting heavy loads and, in a classic case of function following form, feature heavily in modern and ancient architecture.

Unfortunately, we often unknowingly compromise this natural support in many ways that feel completely relaxed. We do things that pull our vertebrae out of alignment, thus reducing or eliminating the natural arch. If the vertebrae are improperly aligned, back pain develops.

The musculature of the spine is often not developed well enough to maintain a natural posture, causing us to hunch. Sometimes we act to correct the problems ourselves without fully knowing how, unintentionally straining and causing tension that only makes things worse.

A proper posture program

A proper posture program, including lower back pain exercises will teach your body to find a comfortable stance, one you can hold for long periods, and train your body to hold it that way. By maintaining good and efficient posture, the pain you have long experienced will slowly diminish, or may even disappear entirely. What was once agonizing will then feel relaxed and natural.

A complete postural adjustment program should strengthen disused muscles so they aren’t fatigued when assuming efficient posture. It should also include stretches to increase flexibility. Relaxation exercises are also important, as tension can also inhibit good posture and encourage developing new bad habits. Finally, body awareness is essential to identify inefficiencies before they cause new pain and introduce new problems that must be corrected later.

All four of these criteria are essential for a good postural program. Without one, you may feel better at first, but over time the aches and pains will return as your body settles into its old and inefficient routines. When combined, however, these four types of exercise support and re-enforce each other. They’ll help you to not only acquire new good habits, but to maintain them, and to prevent inefficiencies from developing.

Better posture is not only important for pain management. It’s great for confidence as well. Those who stride through life standing straight and with heads held high are often treated with distinction, seen as inspirational. Striving to improve your posture is not only simple, but can have effects in many areas of life beyond naturally eliminating pains that may have plagued you for years. It is only a few steps away.

What Is The Best Sciatica Cure?

Most people who are in their old age already can be victims of sciatica, which is a pain that results from irritation of one of the sciatic nerves and includes pain in the hip and buttock area.

But the fact of the matter is, anyone can have sciatic problems, even those who are still in the prime of their age can experience sciatica especially when they try to do some sudden twisted motions that could irritate or compress the sciatic nerves found on the back of the leg all the way up to the lower back. For some, this can be a temporary problem but if they can’t find some right sciatic stretches exercises in time, it could turn for the worse.

Sciatic problems can be easily eliminated only if you know what type of remedy that is good for it. The problem is, most people may have found the right sciatic pain treatment but they don t do their own part so that their health problem can be eliminated in time. Yes, they can exercise their sciatic nerves to bring it back to its original state but if they keep on doing things that have made their sciatic nerves painful and tender, then, that treatment they have been using is worthless. So, what are the things you need to do in order to prevent sciatica or to get rid of sciatica as soon as possible? First of all, if you’re lifting something, don’t lift while standing, meaning, you have to squat down in order to lift something without hurting your back.

It’s really very important that you should also take care of your body and be conscious of what you’re doing especially when it involves your back or your spine. However, if you are thinking about a sciatic cure in the form of drugs like steroids or painkillers, you better go to the doctor first but if you need natural help, go and look for these specific sciatic exercises.

Unfortunately, most of the time we compromise our arches without even realizing it. The demands of the modern lifestyle requires us to be always on our feet. We barely stop our momentum to take care of some minor issues in life. We overlook minor ailments such us common cold, sore throat and even a toothache. There are just not enough hours in the day to solve all of these problems. However for those suffering from back pain, moving on while neglecting the pain is a tall order .

Extreme pain emanating from a herniated disc can be enervating. The spasms and aches from the crushed nerves feel as if with one step, it will all be over. How does one cope with such a painful barrier? Is it treatable and does it enable one to continue a normal routine? The following question and answer discussion endeavors to illuminate some of the basic issues about the subject.

What is herniated disc and what are the contributory factors?

A disc becomes herniated when it is pressed against nerve endings. This pressure can produce extreme pain leading to numbness and stinging feeling. Although there are a multitude of different causes, a herniated disc is normally associated with old age. As we age, the discs in our spine become brittle and could actually lose some of its cushion. The effect is that the disc may be subjected to tear, forcing the nucleus to push through and end up putting pressure on the nerves. Sport injuries and improper lifting of heavy objects are some of the causes why people experience herniated disc at least once in their lifetime .

What are the associated signs?

People afflicted with herniated discs experience pain in the back and leg portion. The pressure applied on the nerve is likely to cause a tingling sensation, numbness, intermitent pain and sometimes muscle spasms.

Is there a way to stop it from recurring?

Although the occurrence is inevitable, you can minimize the possibility of sustaining an injury. Make sure to exercise daily and do some stretching before you warm up. Most importantly, avoid smoking and if you are a smoker, try to kick the habit as early as you can. Such unhealthy habit promotes discs degeneration. Also if you lift heavy objects, make sure you are in the correct posture by using your knees rather than your back.

How is a herniated disc treated?

The most effective treatment for a herniated disc is spinal decompression therapy. Surprisingly, this treatment is non-surgical, non-invasive and much cheaper than most procedures. The treatment process highlights the application of pressure to your spine. The procedure entails stretching the discs to allow the blood supply and other important nutrients to circulate into the spine. The disc is then able to gain flexibility and begin to heal, alleviating muscle spasms. Spinal decompression therapy is perfect for a herniated disc because the treatment itself is pain-free. The procedure requires you to lie on a table and have to be hooked to a strap which is the source of pressure to your spine. Patients who undergo 4-5 sessions of spinal decompression therapy per week are hopeful that the treatment will enable them to go back to normalcy. They can actually focus on more important things, rather than being stuck on the couch in debilitating pain. At last, a reliable treatment is available.
