Overcoming the Distress of Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic nerve pain is a cluster of circumstances which arise from injury or constriction of the sciatic nerve or any of the 5 nerves from which the sciatic nerve arises. This collection of signs and symptoms is also known as sciatica. If you would like to understand sciatic nerve pain, you should begin with the starting point of this nerve and learn what it does for your body.

The sciatic nerve stems from 5 distinct nerves in the lower spinal area. These 5 nerves each contribute to feeling in the bottom portion of the anatomy. You may have discomfort when either the sciatic nerve or any of the five original nerves is affected. Each of these nerves can manifest a discrete symptom that may be stronger than the others. If the sciatic nerve is the one being affected, you will probably feel the pain throughout the butt and legs, all the way to the feet.

The sciatic nerve is the major nerve in a person’s anatomy, both in terms of thickness and length. This nerve acts to carry sensation to most of the regions in the lower part of the anatomy, including the toes, butt, and back of the legs. These are the parts of the body that will be impacted by sciatic nerve pain once it occurs. Sciatica can bring you a lot of pain, and it can become excruciating in a number of cases.

Sciatic nerve pain treatment can be as straightforward as changing some of your ordinary daily habits, or it could be as extreme as having surgery. The type of treatment you’ll choose will be determined by what led to the condition in the first place. Sitting for extended periods of time without moving can pinch the sciatic nerve, thus causing pain. Some people acquire sciatica on account of a slipped disc. Getting rid of the tingling sensation and numbness can be as easy as shifting about in your chair if you’ve been sitting for quite some time, or changing to a more comfortable chair. A slipped disc may necessitate physiotherapy or surgery if it’s quite serious.

Some alternative approaches to sciatica home treatment include limiting your activities for a while and using medicine to loosen up the muscles and minimize soreness. The good news is that sciatica isn’t fatal, even though the discomfort it results in might make you think so.

Symptoms of sciatica you should be aware of

Pain in the lower back accompanied with cramps must be approached with an open mind. Taking a Tylenol is not always an acceptable solution. In reality, the pain may be associated with Sciatic nerve damage which, in fact, is not as bad as it sounds.

Much of the general population has suffered from some kind of lower back pain. Often, it is not considered serious and may go away on its own. However, if it becomes chronic in nature, and does not go away after a few days, it may be symptoms of sciatica.

Leg Pains

Sciatica is a condition of hip and leg pain usually due to a vertebral disk giving pressure to the sciatic nerve. Sometimes, numbness can also occur. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for this numbness. However, there are exercises that can be done to ease the leg pain. Often the symptoms are mistaken for a Charlie horse or other type of leg cramp. One should check with a doctor to rule out the possibility of Sciatica. If properly diagnosed, it’s possible to get rid of it.

Buttock and hips aches

The symptoms of Sciatica are usually characterized by an aching sensation or shooting pains. These can be localized to the back, cantered around the hips or even move down either leg. In some cases these pains can be felt in the calves or even foot. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms it’s quite possible that you have this condition and it would definitely be recommended to seek medical attention. A doctor may seek to prescribe medication, such as pain relief or non steroidal anti inflammatory medication. Further treatment may also involve manipulation of the spine and a course of physiotherapy. Catching the symptoms  early can prevent more serious problems down the line.

If you believe that you are suffering from symptoms of sciatica you need to go to your doctor. Only he can determine if it is truly this or something else. If it is, your doctor may prescribe some medications. But be aware that there are many natural cures available too.

Sciatica Nerve Treatment

Sometimes Sciatica sufferers need outside help with their treatment. This can often be done with the aid of friends or family members. It can be something as simple as help with chores around the house or running errands. Getting the help you need can actually make the recovery time faster. For those that don’t have anyone to help, or are too embarrassed to ask for help, there are companies that will come to one’s home. If the in-home treatment isn’t enough, one should seek a doctor’s care.

Being healthy

Ensure healthy fruits and vegetables in your dishes, this will help you in having a sound health. You can never find any better way than to growing a good food habit if you really wish to get healthy and moreover if you have fruits, nuts and vegetables in your diet you will always be ready to exercise and get your  nerves damage out. Take care of yourself and this is the best way of treating yourself when you are reluctant to get home treatment.

Exercising the correct way

Exercise is one of the best Sciatic nerve treatment. Stretching often, along with your exercise regiment is very helpful too. Nerve treatments only relieve the symptoms and pain. There are various types of exercises that can be done. Abdominal stretch exercises are simple to do. Crunches are the easiest. To do a crunch lay your back flat to the ground with you hands folded behind your head. Next lift your body slightly until you feel your body tighten up a bit, then slowly release, and then lay flat again. Doing this exercise repeatedly will really help with  treatments (remember not to over do it).

By following these sciatic nerve treatment tips outlined above, you will be well on your way to getting relief from your pain.

Sciatica Symptoms, Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica is a very common condition and has several main causes, some of the main ones being reviewed here.

Below are a selection of some natural treatments you may find useful in treating this condition:

sudden shooting pain in lower backThis article looks at the 4 main causes of Sciatica and helps you identify which one may be causing your back pain.

Sciatica is a condition where pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve, causing localized back pain. Thankfully, there are only 4 main causes for Sciatica.

1. Piriformis Syndrome. This condition is where an imbalance in the muscles leads to the hips and pelvis being out of alignment. This imbalance ultimately shortens and tightens the piriformis muscle, with in turn puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. With 640 muscles in the body, all it takes is 1 to be out of balance and you have a problem. When we talk about a muscle imbalance, we mean that one side is stronger than the other, which effectively pulls the other side (and the bones and joints) out of place.

2. Herniated discs. A herniated disc is where a disc sticks out from between the vertebra. You guessed it already — it’s caused by a muscle imbalance and resulting pressure over time leads to this condition. You may also have guessed that no amount of chiropractic work, drugs, injections or stimulation can correct a muscle imbalance. Sadly, many people struggle with back pain for years because they never get to the underlying problem of why the disc became herniated in the first place.

3. Spinal stenosis. Spinal stenonis is a condition where the spinal canal narrows and pressure is placed on the nerves and there are 4 main causes.

Aging: the aging process effects the ligaments between vertebra and also the facet joints of the spinal column by making them harden.

causes symptoms of lower back painSpurs can also develop on the bones.

Trauma: car accidents, lifting injuries, etc, can damage the delicate spine and spinal canal.

Heredity: A small spinal canal or other structural problem can lead to spinal stenosis in a young person.

Fluorosis: caused by over-exposure to chemicals or other fluoride containing materials and leads to a softening of the bones or hardening of the ligaments.

4. Isthmic Spondylolisthesis. This is where one vertebra slips out of position and effectively moves in and out of place, which causes pain in the nerves of the spinal canal. It is primarily caused by degenerative diseases like arthritis and in the area where there is the most curvature of the spine.

So there you have it, the 4 main causes of Sciatica.

The next step to permanent relief from back pain is to identify the muscle imbalances. Once they have been determined, then you must take the right steps towards correcting them. You now have a great understanding of just how back pain develops, so you are in a much better position to formulate a strategy for recovery than 95% of everyone else out there.
