Causes of sciatica are varied, and unfortunately in many cases the cause of sciatic pain cannot be identified. It is believed that the general wear and tear of the body can result in sciatica pain, which can usually be relieved with some form of sciatica treatment. Sciatic nerve pain is caused by injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve pain starts when the main nerve into your leg, the sciatic nerve, is irritated, pinched, or compressed in some way. This can happen for one or more of several reasons; the following are the main causes of sciatica:

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis – A stress fracture in the fifth lumbar vertebra, known as L5 can cause disc movement and hence sciatic symptoms.

Piriformis Syndrome – The Piriformis muscle is located in your lower back and can sometimes spasm, resulting in sciatica symptoms.

Degenerative Disc Disease – Discs in your spine age just as you do, and are subject to wear and tear. This is just another way of saying that your discs are aging and one of them has given way, hence pinching, irritating or putting pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Lumbar spinal stenosis – Different roots of your sciatic nerve pass through passageways in your spine. The passageways could become smaller, which will result in pinching, irritation or increased pressure on the nerve.

Lumbar herniated disc – The discs in your spine are like shock absorbers, which allows the back to bend and swivel. Ageing may weaken or damage these discs and a disc may bulge out or even split, pinching or putting pressure on your sciatic nerve. This is one of the most common causes of sciatica pain.

Trauma – Accidents that causes sudden compression of the sciatic nerve can produce great pain, for example, breaking a bone that results in pressure on the nerve.

Tumors – This may result in irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve and produce sciatica.

Pregnancy – When you carry a baby there is extra strain on your spine, which can cause sciatic pain.

Advice and guidance on sciatica treatment products that are opening sufferers eyes to new sciatic nerve treatment methods can be found by visiting the new website “Guidance On Sciatica Treatment Products”.

Can you get the answers that will remove the pain that sciatica sufferers have to deal with? I personally believe you will, but the only way to really find out is to visit http://www.guidanceon.com/sciatica/.

Muscles are meant to work together, contracting and releasing, working as one

For years we have been conditioned to believe that isolating our muscles and exercising them in segregated sections helps to concentrate on each individual area. Now people are realizing that this is not such a good idea. Working the muscles in unison is known as full-body spine exercises and are found to be much more useful.

>> Back pain, neck pain, sciatica? Click for Free Book 7 Day Back Pain Cure Limited number available

Many muscles are connected to the spine and commonly referred to as the "core". Because the muscles have to coordinate the movement of many necessary joints in many different directions, keeping them strong and in tone is important. Core stability is an essential determinant of success for all sports people. They have learned that the body’s core muscles are the foundation for all other movement.

When a small group of muscles are worked out individually, they are built up and toned to stand-alone but can they stand the strain of working together with the other surrounding muscles? Of course they cannot. Inside the torso, the spine, pelvis and muscles support the scapula that all also work in unison and create a solid base of support for muscles. This proves that muscles are meant to work together, contracting and releasing, working as one as presented in full-body spine exercises.

There are many who argue that muscles must be isolated in order for each muscle to become as strong and independent if need be. To a certain degree this does make sense but unfortunately, not true. Muscles are interconnected and if one muscle becomes more flexible and stronger than an attached member, it will put strain on the weaker muscle, causing a terrible imbalance. This also has a lot to do with our functional fitness, that is to say, the essential performance of our daily living and normal regular activities. Full-body spine exercises will keep all muscles at full potential when needed regularly. Injuries are also reduced when the muscles interact with one another to protect the weak from sprains.

While isolation exercises have been the popular method for keeping muscles in shape for years and years, full spine exercises are entering to make a big difference in full body coordination. People are learning that working a variety of muscle groups at one time and as a team is exactly like a well tuned engine. When all the parts of your car work together the car runs well, but as soon as one part weakens the would engine is affected. If you want to improve your posture, make sure you take advantage of a full body spine exercise routine. Working many muscles together is vital to improve posture over the long term.

One of the common causes of sciatica is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back, officially known as lumbar spinal stenosis

If you suffer from lumbar back pain, then you know it can be harrowing and very hard to live with. Much of the activities we do depend on having a strong and healthy lower back, and without one, every activity we do, or every moment spent upright can be excruciating.

       >> For immediate and natural pain relief click here Now!

Since it may not be evident what has caused the pain, we are often left in wonder if it will ever subside.Thankfully, there is hope. Unless you have had a serious injury such as a break, most lumbar back pain can be lessened or alleviated completely and in a natural way by a good postural program and a regular exercise regimen. Also by the energy therapy eft which you can learn to apply yourself in minutes

      >> Pain relief with EFT. Learn More

The lumbar back is the site of many muscles that are key to our maneuverability. The spine alone is packed with hundreds of tiny muscles, each playing an integral role in almost every physical action we perform.

In addition to the many muscles, the lumbar back also provides support by curving in toward the body, forming an arch. Arches are stable structures capable of efficiently supporting lots of weight, which is why they appear often in both modern and historic architecture.

Unfortunately, we often lose this natural support in ways we aren’t aware of. By adopting poor postural habits for so long that they feel completely normal, we slowly draw this structure out of alignment. Then, when we hurt because of it, we aren’t sure from where the pain originates. After all, how we sit or stand doesn’t seem painful. It may, in fact, seem as if we’re doing nothing demanding at all, so why should that hurt?

Muscle strengthening

Keeping the spine properly aligned can be difficult for someone not used to doing so. Often the problem involves muscles that have weakened due to disuse, and how to strengthen them and improve posture isn’t immediately obvious.

Sometimes we even try too hard to correct our postures that we overly strain ourselves and cause new tension that makes the process harder to deal with. Tension makes muscles tired, and fills them with fatigue toxins that cause aches and pains and will encourage bad habits, and doing so, will continue a difficult cycle. Correct posture does not involve strength alone however.

Actually, better posture includes a combination of strength and relaxation. If all the muscles in your back become tense, the natural arches straighten into a rod. If all your muscles loosen up, the arches become too extreme. A good postural program strengthens the right muscles while allowing the remainder to relax, and will result in naturally re-enforcing the supportive arches needed to have a pain-free back.

A good posture regimen will help train your body to achieve a comfortable stance that you can hold for long periods, and condition your body to hold it that way. By having good and adequate posture, the pain you have been suffering from will slowly lessen, or vanish completely. What was once tormenting you will begin to feel relaxed and natural.

Good posture can benefit you not only in pain management. It is great for confidence as well. People with good postures appear bold and very confident and are treated accordingly. All these great advantages are easily attainable with a bit of effort. Soon, you can be enjoying a pain-free and healthy lumbar back and feel at ease.

With age, comes experience, wisdom, and a long list of health complications. It’s true that a healthy way of life promotes longevity but as nature takes its toll on our bodies, we become more susceptible to illnesses. As our bones weaken and the probability of accidents increase, back problems such as spinal stenosis turn into a reality for many.

Affecting primarily the lumbar and cervical areas of the spine, spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal (which is composed of nerves and the spinal cord itself), begins to compress. The narrowing per se does not cause extreme pain, it’s the pressed nerve endings that causes discomfort. For those who suffer from lumbar spinal stenosis, they tend to experience pain and/or numbness in their back and legs. With cervical spinal stenosis cases, the symptoms are generally more severe. This pain can occur in their arms, legs and even cause imbalance.

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition that attacks people who have weak bone structure that is why this illness is common to older patients. As we age, the bones begin to lose its calcium component and the cushion that protects the area. As a result, it becomes more challenging to walk long distances as your agility is impaired. While some are born with it, women who are over 50 tend to be primary targets. If you are suffering from painful spinal stenosis, it is recommended that you look at all of your options. Surgery is considered as a last resort especially with older patients. Nonetheless, there are many beneficial treatments which are non-invasive in nature that could reduce some of the pain.

Spinal decompression therapy, for example, is one treatment that is pain-free. It requires the patient to lay on a table hooked up to a harness and receive pressure to their spine. This pressure actually creates a vacuum effect, tugging the discs apart, allowing them to gain flexibility and stretch out. By decompressing this area, vital nutrients and blood supply re-enter, which allows the spine to heal. The result allows greater mobility and the likelihood of pain and muscle spasms are minimized. Though people with herniated discs often experience a full recovery, those with spinal stenosis may only feel less pain, given that their bones are already degenerating. Nevertheless, this makes a lot of difference. Most patients have to receive 4-5 sessions per week for a minimum of twenty sessions.

In addition to spinal decompression therapy, those with spinal stenosis can also benefit from exercise. Your flexibility determines the treatment available to you — many would advise Pilates, Yoga or a physical therapy-centered treatment. Exercises that focus on your back pain are important in the healing process. If you are still experiencing pain and discomfort, you may ask your doctor and seek advice on medications. Cortisone shots give temporary relief in muscle spasms. Regardless of what you choose, there are many methods to tackle spinal stenosis. If we could reduce just some of the pain in our lives, living into our 100 s would certainly be a walk in the park.

Acute low back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor and it is second only to the ordinary cold as a cause for missing work. It is the leading workmen s comp injury and cause of disability in people under the age of 45. Back pain is the fifth most used diagnosis for hospital admission and ranks second in diagnoses leading to surgery. An alarming increase in obesity and the aging of our population is one of the causes to the increase of back pain.

Causes Of Acute Back Pain

An injury or trauman such as a car accident

A sports injury

Lifting or straining at work or around the house

Sudden twisting movement while lifting or moving a heavy object

A fall

A blow to the body that is strong enough to force a joint out of its normal position

Chronic overuse of muscles and tendons from repetitive, prolonged movement

Symptoms

Sudden sharp pain in lower back that causes extreme discomfort

Muscle spasms or cramping in lower back

A dull, persistent nagging pain in lumbar region that appears after hours of work, such as shoveling snow, digging, or bending.

Sharp pain in low back may radiate down front, side or back of one leg

Activity may aggravate the pain

Sitting may also make it worse

Decreased range of motion

Difficulty walking

Problems bending forward or sideways

Standing erect may become painful

Acute back pain may gradually ease and clear up after a month or so. This is usually the case when the pain is due to trauma resulting in back strain or a sprain. Muscle strains and sprains are often grouped together and referred to by physicians as musculoligamentous injuries of the lumbar spine.

Back Strain Lumbar Strain
The tendons are fibrous bands that are connected muscles to the bone. The muscle fibers in the low back are stretched or town with a back strain. Tendons that help the support the spine in the low back may also be twisted, torn or pulled. The result is a lumbar strain, also diagnosed as a low back strain.

Lumbar Sprain – Back Sprain
A sprain is the stretching or tearing of a ligament which is a tough band of tissue that connects two or more bones at a joint and prevents excessive movement of that joint.Low back muscles and the ligaments are stretched or torn with a lumbar sprain.

If the pain persists three months or more it is considered chronic. This may become progressively worse and the cause can sometimes be difficult to determine. A complete physical exam must be completted done as well as lab tests and x-rays. To determine the cause of back pain a CT scan and MRI might be ordered from your Doctor.

What is Sciatica?
If you are a sedentary worker experiencing back pain or lower body pain, especially in the legs in the form of numbness, tingling and you have a problem walking or flexing your muscles, consult a doctor immediately. The cause of this could be a condition known as sciatica.

Sciatica is a set of conditions that are caused when the sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve with the diameter as that of a finger in the body is pressurized or an irritation occurs in the radicular nerve that exits the lower spine it causes pain in the lower body especially the lower back, the back of thighs and legs and the hip region. Thus this condition is also known as radiculopathy. Sciatica is not always very serious and generally resolves in 4-6 weeks but in some cases it may require surgery, especially when caused due to infections or tumors and in such situations it is best to have the opinion of a medical practitioner promptly.

Sciatica Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms of sciatica are pain in the lower extremities of the body especially starting at the base of the spine and routing downwards along the path of the sciatic nerve or nerve root to the pelvic region, buttocks, thighs, back of the legs and foot. This pain may be a slight nuisance pain that can be a tingling pain or even a burning sensation and numbness that can vary in intensity and also be constant or intermittent developing gradually, making it hard to detect always.

Sciatica usually occurs only on one side of the body.

Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica pain is generally seen in people who need to spend long amounts of time sitting or standing and bad posture and lack of muscle movement causes the muscles to constrict or be irritated causing pain. It can even be bought on by hard sneezes, coughing fits and lifting something, these activities may cause pressure on the spine and thus it may irritate the radicular nerve by extending beyond its normal position.

Commonly the major cause can be pinned as disc herniation in the lumbar spine which presses directly on the sciatic nerve and any triggers by such a reaction for example by irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone which in turn produces the symptoms of sciatica. Besides a compressed or a pinched nerve, other causes could also be tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury etc. thus sciatica is not really a disease by itself but rather many other dependants make it into a medical condition worthy of attention. Even something as simple as muscle strain may cause the muscle to freeze up or be “pulled” and gradually develop into this problem.

Spinal stenosis is the constriction or narrowing of the spaces in the spine that causes the spine or the nerves to be compressed in a way that it causes pain especially in the lower back.

In advanced spinal osteoarthritis, a bit of cartilage may break away and become mobile in the spinal area and become a reason of irritation and inflammation which when occurring in the lower back region may develop into sciatica by putting undue pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is also called in degenerative disc disease.

If a vertebra slips over the other, which is commonly called as slipped disc or Spondylolisthesis the skewed vertebra could pressurize the sciatic nerve.

There are still other issues which can trigger sciatica pain like Piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction etc which are not really sciatica but these diseases may also set off sciatica because of their symptoms.

Sciatica Treatment
In cases which are very extreme sciatica can be serious enough for being operated upon. Thus, it becomes very important to diagnose the real cause for sciatica in order to rule out the possibility of another serious heath problem which could require immediate attention and/or surgery.

Sciatica treatment should only be carried out by a trained health professional. Besides anti-inflammatory medication and analgesics, exercise is also prescribed under the care of a physiotherapist. As the type of exercise depends on the cause of sciatic pain they must be done after consultation and practiced on a regular basis, twice a day to provide complete relief from pain. Though bed rest may seem like the better option but inactivity results in the muscles degenerating further and exercising them makes them more mobile by boosting circulation and helps to adequately carry the fluids and nutrients across the system.

Minding the body posture and avoiding soft surfaces that encourage slouching must be a part of treatment. Being in the same position for long or lifting things puts strains on the spinal chord as well as the muscles in the hips and legs thus that must also be avoided.

It is best to consult a doctor immediately in order to diagnose the problem correctly and ensure that appropriate steps are taken or this could develop into a grave problem.
